Windows Users Report Computers Freezing During Automatic Updates

Clients with computers running Microsoft Windows have reported their computers freezing up, especially during the Windows Automatic Update process. This is due to a process (SVCHOST.EXE) running in the background taking up to 100% of your CPU usage. The problem is a result of a faulty Windows update by Microsoft. Specifically, you may experience issues if updates are set to automatically download.
Follow these steps, in order, if you think your computer is affected by this issue:
- Open Internet Explorer Browser
- Go to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/893803/
- Go to the section, MORE INFORMATION
- Go to, For Other Versions of Windows
- Click on, Download the 893803 (v2) package now
- Click, Continue at Validation Required
- Click, Download files below - Genuine Microsoft Software
- Click the 3rd download button labeled, WindowsInstaller-KB893803-v2-x86.exe
- Click, Run
- Click Run again, if prompted with a security warning
- Proceed through installation wizard
- RESTART YOUR COMPUTER
- Open Internet Explorer Browser
- Go to: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927891/
- Go to the Resolution section of page
- Go to fourth download link labeled, Download the Update for Windows XP (927891) package now
- Click, Continue at Validation Required
- Click, Download and then Run
- At Security Warning, click, Run
- Proceed through installation wizard
- RESTART YOUR COMPUTER
- If necessary, complete the Microsoft updates your computer was trying to install
- If there is a yellow shield icon in the bottom right near your clock, click and choose Express Installation. Your computer might reboot after the updates are installed.
- If there is no yellow shield but you want to verify your updates are complete, follow the insturctions at http://virus.unh.edu/instructions.asp#winupdates.
